  Nightfire! is the short story prequel to the novel,
Corvette Nightfire. It reveals the mystery of Corvette Nightfire's grandparents: the two Tarahumara Indians who adopted
the name "Fuego de Noche" (Nightfire) when they were forced by a Mexican drug cartel to run marijuana across the
border.
  
  Corvette's grandparents, Día and Luna, were two of the "running Indians" of the Copper Canyon
in northern Mexico. When the cartel of Sinaloa began growing marijuana and poppy on native lands, they enlisted the
Indians to do their mule work because of their extraordinary running abilities. If the natives refused, often they were
killed for their lands. Día and his wife, Luna, found themselves running stolen cars from Texas for the cartel. Their
plot to escape their enslavement became complicated by the birth of their son, Rogelio, in Texas, in 1963. Rogelio
sought for years to discover the mystery of what happened to his parents, who left him in Texas when he was a toddler to
be raised by a white rancher couple, but it was Rogelio's son, Corvette, who finally made his way to the state of
Chihuahua, Mexico, to learn more of his origins.
